Color & The Written Word

Crackled Abstraction, Canon Powershot S3 IS..... Sarah e. Smith Photography It is a rainy and miserable day outside today. Fall seems to be on a whirlwind visit this year as most of the leaves on the trees near my house are already down, the poor bare braches are trembling in the wind. This is the perfect kind of day to snuggle up with a good book and cup of warm chai. Speaking of books, I am looking for something new to dive into. Since having a little one and running full force into my art recently, I have not had too much time to read, which is something that I realized I was missing and needed to spare some time for. So if any of you have some suggestions send them my way! On days like this too I like going around my house and taking photos of unusual objects and compositions. I find it funny/interesting how color seems to be such a central and driving force in my photo and art work....considering that all of the walls in my house are a beige color, I drive a tan car and all of my clothes are earthy and neutral. Yet, I still have this secret attraction for color that pops up in the work I create. But I suppose that the two balance each other out...on my beige walls hangs a bright and colorful painting, the neutral color of the wall accentuating the vibrant colors in the piece. It still drives my husband nuts though any time I come home with a new brown or black shirt :) How does color affect your life? Do you embrace it in the everyday? Or do you too have a secret affinity for it? What's your favorite color? I always enjoy hearing your perspectives! Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

I'm like you in the color thing. My walls are generally neutral, but I do have bursts of color...deep red right now is an accent. My favorite color is green...apple green, lime green...any green but Hunter green. I have two rooms with green on the walls, my kitchen and craft room. On me, I tend to wear browns, gray, green...some color in the summer and spring. Teal is a color that I'm liking lately...with brown of course. I think color attraction tells alot about a person. I love black and white photos, but when I see color shots I like them in saturated color. I've people who like, say, the color green, have alot of the same tastes...are drawn to the same aesthetic. Even the same interests alot of times. Odd. Not sure on good books anymore. I have too little ones. I buy books and they SIT. I love the book "I Know This Much Is True" by Wally Lamb though.

my home is white, white and wood furniture...and neutral earthy colors, too. i LOVE color, bright colors but i can't live in a colorful house, i'm sure i'll get bored and will want to change everything every 2 months :) which is not a good idea i guess...
for a long time in my life i've been totally in love with black and white and brown...then green..pink...purple...lately i've discovered gray and i have quite a romance with it, it matches any other color and i'm kinda obsessed with it now :)

have a lovely w-end friend!!

I am attacted to color, like a firefly to the light. It used to be all black in my clothing but as I get older, I realize color makes me happy. Pinks, greens, orange (how I love orange!) and swirly rainbows of color.
Books.....my favorite topic!

I loved Shadow of the Wind (can't remember the author) and everyone I recommend it to, seems to enjoy the story which is historical fiction with mystery set in Spain.
Eat Pray Love has been on everyone's favorite list; that's my next book. And my two all-time favorite books ever, The Cider House Rules by John Irving and The Hours by Michael Cunningham.

Hey stranger! Yes, you do have quite the knack for color and for finding completely unusual compositions - which is so frieken awesome! I love color too but I dont use it as much as I should. I stick to a pretty standard palette. Not sure why. Sounds like all is great with you - glad to hear it ;-)

i'm into contrast. if things in the visual field are dull, or muted, or earthy toned, then a vibrant color is a real wake up call. if everything is over-the-top colorful, then a muted tone will stand out. thats why tan lines rock and why our lips and eyes and nipples are darker than the rest of our skin...we are hardwired to get excited about contrast. this is also why i really dig your photos, not only do they display a firm grasp of the concept of contrast, but they stand out from the pack as uniquely yours. blog on, tim
